CHAUPADI

CHAUPADI

Living in a country where we work-ship female goddesses, it is still unbelievable to accept that taboos like "CHAUPADI" are yet followed in many areas of the country, particularly the western regions. For all of you wondering what chaupadi is, it is a Nepali tradition followed since ancient times where menstruating women are separated from the rest of the family members. It is believed that the women who menstruate are untouchables. If menstruating women live in the same household as the other family members, they might bring unfortunate family events. Menstruating women are ruthlessly forced to sleep in the cowsheds or makeshift bunkers. Although "CHAUPADI" has been banned long back by the Supreme court of Nepal in 2005, this tradition is still normalized in Nepal's western regions irrespective of the judgment. The outcome of practicing chaupadi can be fatal at times, resulting in the death of many women around the country due to suffocation, fire, snake bites, and many more reasons. It's been a long fight to abolish this system entirely in Nepal. Several progressive organizations and individuals are fighting for those women who suffer every month in atrocious conditions. In Kathmandu, people trying to modernize Nepal realized chaupadi is a shame to the country and needs to be terminated as soon as possible. The country's lawmakers need to take strict actions against the culprits who try to commit the crime and pressurize women for seclusion during their periods.
